Before you appoint a marine surveyor
What information is needed for a Latvia marine survey quote?
Provide the exact marina, harbour, yard or inland access point, vessel particulars, construction, survey purpose and preferred date. Include launch status, haul-out and sea-trial availability, report language and any insurer, lender, registry or official requirement.
Is a private pre-purchase survey the same as a Latvian registration inspection?
No. An independent buyer’s condition survey is a contractual service. Latvian registration, technical data and official documents are separate matters handled by the competent authority for the vessel category, including the Road Traffic Safety Directorate for craft within its registration system.
Which craft are registered with Latvia’s Road Traffic Safety Directorate?
The Directorate’s published guidance includes personal watercraft, motor boats, cutters and certain recreational, rowing and specialised vessels, with definitions and exceptions based on construction, length, engine power and use. Confirm the current category directly before relying on a private report.
Can a surveyor attend outside Riga?
Potentially, subject to availability and travel. Ventspils, Liepāja, Gulf of Riga harbours and inland locations are separate assignments, so confirm the precise facility, access window and whether suitable lifting is available.
Can I request an English-language report?
Yes, include English in the request. Confirm the final language, recipient, reliance rights and whether any Latvian translation or authority-specific form is also required before appointment.
Are travel, haul-out and sea-trial costs included?
Only when expressly included in the surveyor’s written quotation. Travel, port access, lift, wash, relaunch, skipper, fuel and specialist testing can be separate.

Potentially. Repair monitoring, sea trials, ultrasound, corrosion testing, stability-related work, accident investigation, marine warranty and commercial handover surveys require the right specialist and, where applicable, the correct formal appointment.
