Before you appoint a marine surveyor
What information is needed for an Iceland marine survey quote?
Provide the exact harbour, marina, yard or anchorage, vessel particulars, construction, survey purpose and preferred date. Include launch status, haul-out and sea-trial access, report language, travel constraints and any insurer, lender, registry or Icelandic Transport Authority requirement.
Is a private pre-purchase survey the same as an Icelandic statutory inspection?
No. A buyer’s independent condition survey is separate from inspections and certificates administered under Icelandic maritime rules. The Icelandic Transport Authority states that recreational craft are subject to periodic surveys and that formal initial inspections and certificates depend on vessel type and use.
Who may carry out an Icelandic recreational-craft periodic survey?
The Icelandic Transport Authority states that the four-year periodic survey is carried out by an authorised inspection body, with annual intermediate inspection requirements also applying. Confirm the current rule, inspection body and vessel category directly for the specific craft.
Can any marine surveyor issue an Icelandic tonnage certificate?
No. Iceland’s official guidance distinguishes boats under 15 metres, which may be measured by specified Transport Authority specialists or trained surveyors from accredited inspection bodies, from larger ships whose calculations follow another approval route. The Icelandic Transport Authority reviews the data and issues the certificate.
Can a surveyor attend outside Reykjavík?
Potentially, subject to availability and travel. Domestic flights, ferries, long road journeys, winter conditions, accommodation and transport of testing equipment may affect timing and cost. Confirm the exact port before requesting a quote.
Are travel, haul-out and sea-trial costs included?
Only when expressly included in the surveyor’s written quotation. Flights, accommodation, car hire, ferry travel, port access, lift, wash, relaunch, skipper, fuel and specialist testing can be separate.
Can you help with other specialist marine survey assignments?
Potentially. New-build and refit supervision, repair inspections, sea trials, stability-related work, ultrasound, corrosion testing, accident investigation, expert-witness work, marine warranty and on-hire or off-hire surveys may require a specialist. Availability, competence and any formal appointment must be confirmed for the exact job.
